Meditation Tips for Beginners
For many one of the first challenges to overcome is to allocate a time to the start a meditation practice. Everyone has different reasons for not finding the time, however once the practice becomes a regular occurrence meditation gives time. Many people report that they feel less busy, less stressed and have more time to engage in other activities as the mind becomes clearer.
Here are a few tips to help you begin your meditation practice.
Select an achievable time for your practice.
Begin with a short practice 5 – 10 minutes.
Set a timer for the length of time that you wish to meditate for. Doing so prevents you from wondering how long you have been meditating for.
Keep a journal to make notes in it after you meditate.
Journaling will help reveal the benefits and obstacles that you experience and overcome.
Select somewhere warm and comfortable without distractions.
When you begin practicing meditation it is a good idea to do so with the eyes lightly closed.
Make sure that you establish a comfortable position.
Meditation can be practiced sitting, lying or moving.
If you find sitting uncomfortable, then begin lying, or sit in a chair with your back supported.
If you start the practice sitting remember that if you experience any physical discomfort, then adapt your position or lie down.
Between meditation sessions take some time to prepare the body for longer seated sessions.
A strong core and mobility through the hips will make sitting more comfortable, this can be achieved through mindful movement, yoga, tai chi, pilates and other low impact activities.
Do not set yourself unrealistic goals.
During meditation everyone experiences a wandering mind, do not worry just bring your attention back to the technique.
If thoughts or memories present themselves during meditation, allow the thought to pass, acknowledge it exists and then continue with the practise.
The benefits of meditation reveal themselves very quickly, consistency will prolong the period that the benefits are experienced for.
Try to establish a short regular practice and then slowly lengthen the time you spend meditating.
Relax and enjoy the process, never force the practise.
